Performance Evaluation of GMSK Modulation in Multipath Channels

In this work performance of Gaussian Minimum Shift Keying (GMSK) modulation is compared with that of conventional QPSK and M-QAM modulation schemes. Use of unfiltered data stream for modulation results in a considerably large bandwidth in the modulated RF signal. Pulse shaping as a signal processing technique has gain grounds as a means to mitigate this problem. Gaussian filter along with square root raised cosine (SRRC) filter are commonly used for pulse shaping in wireless communication systems. In this paper bit error performance of GMSK over AWGN and multipath channels is compared to other modulation techniques. Results from computer simulation show improved symbol error rate performance over QPSK, 8-QAM, and 16-QAM signaling. Key-Words: Pulse shaping, GMSK, QAM, Gaussian filter
